A flooring sheet made of oxidized linseed oil, pine rosin, wood flour, and mineral pigment pressed onto a jute backing — patented in 1863 and quietly excellent ever since. Not to be confused with vinyl, which borrowed its name and none of its chemistry.

A metamorphic stone formed when sandstone recrystallizes under heat and pressure — mostly quartz, which makes it dramatically harder and more acid-resistant than marble. It delivers marble-like veining with close to granite-like toughness.

A dense talc-chlorite stone that is effectively nonporous and chemically inert — it shrugs off acids that etch marble and never needs sealing. Softness is the trade: it scratches easily and darkens into a visible patina, traditionally accelerated with mineral oil.
