Virgin Rubber Flooring
New SBR/EPDM rubber compound
Gym flooring made from new rubber compound formulated for interiors — as opposed to recycled crumb rubber, which is shredded vehicle tires re-bonded with urethane. They look nearly identical and are not the same material.
Why it matters
This is the gym flooring question nobody answers straight. Tires were formulated for roads, not living rooms, and studies of recycled tire crumb consistently find VOCs and PAHs off-gassing — strongest when new and warm, which describes exactly a garage gym in summer. Virgin rubber formulated for interiors and certified to GREENGUARD Gold or FloorScore is the answer for basement and in-home gyms. That familiar tire smell is the material telling you what it is made of.
