Natural Latex
Hevea brasiliensis sap · Dunlop and Talalay process
Rubber-tree sap whipped with air and vulcanized into foam via the Dunlop process (denser, firmer) or Talalay (flash-frozen, softer, more consistent). Unlike polyurethane memory foam, it involves no isocyanate chemistry and needs no chemical flame retardants when paired with wool.
Why it matters
The mattress core question, answered at the material level: natural latex is the alternative to the petroleum foam stack, sleeping cooler, pushing back instantly instead of slow-sinking, and lasting roughly twice as long. The catch is labeling — "natural latex" legally covers blends that are mostly synthetic styrene-butadiene. The material earns its reputation only in certified form: GOLS for the latex, ideally inside a GOTS-certified mattress.
