Thermo-Aspen
Thermally modified aspen · Populus tremula · ThermoWood
Aspen baked at roughly 190–212°C in a low-oxygen chamber, permanently changing its chemistry: sugars that feed mold are destroyed, equilibrium moisture drops by nearly half, and the boards stop moving with humidity. Nothing is added — the modification is heat and steam.
Why it matters
Thermo-aspen is the modern Finnish answer to the sauna-wood question: resin-free, nearly scent-free, hypoallergenic, and more stable than the unmodified original — without any chemical treatment to audit. It is the default bench wood in contemporary Nordic saunas and the usual recommendation for anyone sensitive to cedar's aromatics.
Benefits
- Modification is pure heat and steam — nothing added, nothing to off-gas
- Completely resin-free with minimal scent; the hypoallergenic sauna choice
- Equilibrium moisture cut ~40–50%: minimal swelling, cupping, or gapping
- Improved rot resistance (EN 350 class 2–3) for wet-room service
- Uniform warm-brown tone through the board, not just at the surface
Best applications

Performance
Watch-outs
- More brittle than unmodified wood — pre-drill everything; edges snap rather than bend
- Reduced screw-holding: fastening details matter on benches
- "Heat-treated" pallet stamps (ISPM 15) are pest control, not thermal modification — different process entirely
- UV silvers the color outdoors without finish
What to verify
Finish, binder, sourcing, and installation conditions to confirm before specifying.
- Genuine thermal modification (ThermoWood or equivalent process certificate), not just kiln-dried
- Treatment class (Thermo-S vs Thermo-D) for the application
- Fastening and pre-drilling specs from the supplier
