Stainless steel with molybdenum added to the standard 304 recipe, giving it resistance to the pitting corrosion that chlorides, salt systems, and ozone eventually inflict on cheaper stainless. The L is low carbon — better corrosion behavior at welds, where tubs and vessels fail first.
Why it matters
Cold plunge tubs live a hard life: near-freezing water, aggressive sanitizers, daily skin contact. 316L is the material difference between the premium plunge tier and the entry tier, and it is rarely explained — it leaches nothing measurable into water you sit in daily, shrugs off ozone and salt, and outlasts the chiller bolted to it. Same logic covers pools, outdoor kitchens, and coastal hardware.

Watch-outs
- "Stainless steel" without a grade number usually means 304 — fine for fresh water, marginal with sanitizers
- A 316L vessel with 304 fittings corrodes at the fittings — the spec must cover the whole wetted path
- Conductive shell: insulation quality matters more than in plastic tubs
- Meaningful cost premium over rotomolded plastic and 304
