MERV

A rating from ASHRAE Standard 52.2 describing how effectively an HVAC filter captures particles across three size ranges. Higher numbers indicate better capture of smaller particles under defined laboratory conditions.

MERV is assigned by measuring capture efficiency in three particle size bands and taking the worst-case performance across a loading sequence. The rating is deliberately conservative, which is part of why a MERV 13 filter's real-world performance on fine particles is often better than the number suggests once it has loaded slightly.

The constraint is pressure drop. A denser medium resists airflow, and a residential air handler designed around a one-inch MERV 8 filter can lose meaningful airflow when a high-MERV filter of the same dimensions goes into the same slot. Reduced airflow degrades heating and cooling capacity, can freeze a coil, and shortens equipment life at the extreme. Increasing filter surface area can allow higher capture efficiency at less resistance than forcing the same airflow through a smaller filter face, which is why a deep pleated media cabinet is often specified in place of a one-inch filter in the same opening. Actual pressure drop depends on media, construction, face velocity, dimensions and loading, and should be checked against the manufacturer's data at the system's design airflow.

MERV-A reports performance after a conditioning procedure intended to reveal efficiency losses in some electrostatically enhanced media. Where it is published alongside the standard rating it provides useful additional context about how a filter is likely to behave in service.

Why it matters

Central filtration is the only mechanism in most houses that treats every room, and it costs almost nothing to upgrade relative to any other air-quality intervention — provided the system can move air through it. That proviso is where the money is. The question worth asking early is how much filter area the air handler can accommodate, checked against the equipment's airflow data, because a deep media cabinet added during mechanical rough-in is inexpensive in a way that retrofitting one into a finished ceiling is not.

The common misunderstanding

That higher MERV is always better. Past what the equipment was designed to push air through, a denser filter reduces airflow, and reduced airflow can cost more in comfort and equipment health than the added capture is worth. The other half of the error is treating the filter as though it runs continuously. A filter only cleans air while the blower is on, which in a system that cycles with the thermostat may be a small fraction of the day.
