Formaldehyde-releasing substances are the practical reason many "composite wood" and furniture assemblies emit formaldehyde even when formaldehyde itself is not intentionally added as the primary ingredient. Urea-formaldehyde and related amino resins used as binders in particleboard, MDF, and some plywood systems are the classic case: the cured product can still release formaldehyde into air over time.

REACH restriction entry 77 addresses both formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances in articles. The regulatory target is the formaldehyde concentration measured from the article under defined test conditions, not a brand claim about resin chemistry alone.

The term does not mean every resin-bonded wood product fails a limit, or that every adhesive is a releaser. It names the mechanism by which many indoor products become emission sources.

Why it matters

When a cabinet box or engineered panel is specified, the binder system often matters as much as the face veneer. Asking whether a product uses formaldehyde-releasing resins — and what emission class or test it clears — is how material selection becomes an air decision rather than a finish decision.

The common misunderstanding

That "no added formaldehyde" and "no formaldehyde-releasing chemistry" are interchangeable phrases. Marketing language varies; what matters for indoor air is measured emission under a named method, not the slogan on the cut sheet.
