Emissions testing puts a product — a wood panel, a finished furniture piece, a flooring assembly — into a defined chamber or reference setup and measures the concentration of target compounds in the air that results. For formaldehyde from wood-based articles, European practice commonly references methods such as EN 717-1; REACH restriction entry 77 points to Appendix 14 reference conditions so market limits are judged on a common basis.

The result is a product-performance number under those conditions. It is not the same as a spot reading taken in a lived-in room, where ventilation, loading, temperature, and other sources change the outcome.

What the term does not cover: pass/fail of every indoor pollutant, or proof that a building is healthy. It answers whether a tested article emits above or below a stated threshold under the test that was run.

Why it matters

Material schedules and furniture packages are where indoor chemistry is decided months before move-in. Emissions test reports are how those choices get verified — or how a "low-VOC" claim gets replaced with a number tied to a method.

The common misunderstanding

That a chamber result is the concentration you will measure in a bedroom. Chamber tests standardize comparison between products; occupied rooms have different volume, ventilation, and source mixes.
