What they're known for

A Santiam Canyon mill since 1922. Its Mass Ply panels are the structure and the interior finish at Gates Residence.

Freres Engineered Wood is a family manufacturer in Lyons, Oregon, in the Santiam Canyon, in business since 1922. It started in lumber, moved to veneer, and now makes Mass Ply Panel: Douglas fir veneer bonded into structural composite lumber, then into large panels. The product is mass timber. It is not conventional lumber-based cross-laminated timber, even where Freres uses that language. At Gates Residence the panels are the structure, the walls, and the ceilings. Freres also reports the wildfire measures around that house, including a 15-foot rock buffer and a 20,000-gallon fire pond. Those figures are the manufacturer's. They are not a test of the finished house, and charred wood cladding is still combustible.
