Tunable White
A lighting control capability that varies correlated color temperature, usually alongside intensity, across the day. A control feature — it does not by itself establish any particular effect on an occupant.

Tunable white is a control capability: fixtures whose correlated color temperature can be varied, usually alongside intensity, under a scheduled or manual control system. Implementations differ — two or more LED channels at different CCTs mixed to a target, or dim-to-warm products following a fixed relationship between output and color.
What makes it a system rather than a fixture is the control layer. A tunable installation needs a protocol such as DALI Type 8 or multi-channel 0–10V, drivers that support it, and a scheduling controller — plus commissioning, because the scenes and transitions are configured after installation and are the part most often left at defaults.
It is worth being precise about what the capability is. Tunable white changes the spectrum a fixture emits over the course of a day. Whether that produces any particular effect on an occupant depends on the light actually reaching the eye — its intensity, timing, duration and spectral content — which is a property of the installed conditions and the household's behavior, not of the hardware's datasheet.
Why it matters
Tunable white is a wiring and control decision, which makes it a rough-in decision. Adding it later usually means new drivers, new control wiring, or a new system. It earns its cost in spaces used across very different times of day — kitchens, primary bedrooms, bathrooms — and is worth much less in a room lit for two hours in the evening.
The common misunderstanding
That installing tunable fixtures delivers a circadian benefit by itself. The hardware makes a schedule possible; the outcome depends on what the light does at the eye, whether the schedule was ever commissioned, and whether occupants override it. Uncommissioned tunable systems sitting at one setting for years are a common and expensive result.
