Radiant Floor Heating

A hydronic or electric system that warms a floor so its surface heats the room largely by radiation. Output is capped by the maximum floor surface temperature that is comfortable and safe underfoot.

Radiant floor heating warms a floor so its surface heats the room, largely by radiant exchange with occupants and other surfaces. Hydronic versions circulate warm water through tubing in a slab or above a subfloor; electric versions use resistance cable or mats, usually across smaller areas such as bathrooms.

Output is bounded by surface temperature. Comfortable and safe floor temperatures cap the heat a floor can deliver per square foot, which means radiant floors suit houses whose heat loss is already low and struggle as a sole heat source in poorly insulated ones. Floor covering is part of the system: thick carpet and pad add resistance between the heat source and the room, and that resistance changes the water temperature the system needs.

Response is slow by design. A heated slab has substantial thermal mass, so it takes hours to change temperature and keeps emitting after the call for heat ends. That produces very steady comfort, makes setback scheduling largely ineffective, and pairs poorly with rooms that need fast response.

Why it matters

Radiant floors are among the most requested comfort features in high-end houses and among the most consequential to get right, because the tubing is in the slab. Loop layout, insulation beneath the slab, design water temperature and floor covering all have to be resolved before concrete is placed. They also raise surface temperatures, which is why they feel better than air temperature alone would predict.

The common misunderstanding

That radiant floors heat the air, or that a warm floor underfoot is the point. Most of the delivered heat is radiant exchange with people and surfaces, and a correctly designed system in a well-insulated house often runs at a surface temperature only slightly above room temperature — which means the floor does not feel warm to a bare foot. A floor that feels hot is usually compensating for a high heat loss.
