Hydronic Heating
Heating that distributes energy through water rather than air. A distribution medium rather than a heat source: the water can be heated by a boiler, a heat pump, or something else entirely.

Hydronic heating distributes heat using water rather than air. Heated water circulates from a source through piping to emitters — radiant floor loops, panel radiators, baseboard, or a coil in an air handler — and returns to be reheated.
The distinction worth holding is that hydronic describes distribution, not the heat source. The water can be heated by a gas or oil boiler, an electric boiler, a heat pump, or solar thermal. Saying a house is hydronically heated says nothing about what it burns, or whether it burns anything.
Design centers on water temperature. High-temperature systems suit small emitters such as baseboard; low-temperature systems need large surfaces such as floors or oversized panels. That matters because heat pumps produce hot water far more efficiently at lower temperatures, which is why low-temperature hydronic design is what makes a heat pump and hydronic distribution work well together — and why retrofitting a heat pump onto a system designed around 180°F water often disappoints.
Hydronic distribution also carries no air, so a house heated this way still needs separate ventilation and separate filtration.
Why it matters
Hydronic distribution delivers even, quiet heat with no air movement, which is why it is common in high-end houses and in radiant floor installations. Its consequence is that it does not do the jobs air-based systems do incidentally: there is no filtration, no ventilation and no dehumidification in a water loop, so all three have to be designed separately rather than assumed. Cooling generally needs its own system as well.
The common misunderstanding
That hydronic heating and radiant floors are the same thing. Radiant floors are one hydronic emitter among several, and hydronic systems can be entirely non-radiant. Electric radiant floors, meanwhile, are radiant without being hydronic at all.
