IEQ
The combined condition of everything inside a building that occupants experience — air, temperature, humidity, light, sound, and the surfaces around them — treated as one system rather than a set of independent problems.

IEQ is the umbrella term for the measurable conditions a person is exposed to indoors. It covers indoor air quality, thermal conditions, lighting and daylight, acoustics, and to varying degrees the visual and spatial qualities of a room. Standards and certification frameworks organize their requirements along roughly these lines.
The value of the term is that it forces the interactions into view. Most decisions that improve one dimension change another. Tightening an enclosure improves thermal performance and cuts infiltration, and it removes the accidental ventilation the house was relying on. Running a ducted system harder improves filtration and raises the noise floor in a bedroom. Adding west-facing glass for daylight adds afternoon solar gain and glare. A house optimized dimension by dimension usually ends up worse than one designed with the tradeoffs on the table.
IEQ is a category, not a metric. There is no single IEQ number, no meaningful IEQ score, and a product claiming to raise IEQ is describing one dimension of it at best. The measurements live one level down: carbon dioxide and particulate concentrations, operative temperature, relative humidity, illuminance and spectrum, background sound level.
Why it matters
Most people evaluate a home one complaint at a time — a stuffy room, a cold floor, an air handler audible from the bed. Treated separately, those get separate fixes that interfere with each other. Treated as IEQ, they resolve into a small set of decisions made early: how the enclosure controls heat and moisture, how outdoor air arrives and gets filtered, how light reaches the room across the day, and where mechanical noise ends up. Those decisions are cheap on paper and expensive in drywall, which is why the term matters more before construction than after.
The common misunderstanding
That IEQ is a rating a house can earn or a number a monitor can display. It is not a measurement — it is the category the measurements belong to. The related error is assuming the dimensions are independent, so that improving air quality could not cost anything in acoustics or energy. In a real house they trade against each other constantly, and the useful skill is knowing which trades are worth making.
