Glazing

The transparent portion of a window or door assembly, and the properties that come with it: thermal transmittance, solar heat gain, visible light transmittance, acoustic performance and any coatings or laminations.

Glazing is the transparent part of a window, door or skylight assembly, and the set of properties that travel with it. Modern residential glazing is rarely a single sheet: it is an insulated glass unit of two or three panes separated by a sealed gas-filled space, with low-emissivity coatings on selected surfaces and sometimes a laminated interlayer.

Four numbers describe most of what matters, and NFRC rates them for the whole assembly rather than the glass alone. U-factor is the rate of heat conduction. SHGC is the fraction of incident solar energy that becomes interior heat. Visible transmittance is how much daylight passes. Acoustic performance, as STC or OITC, depends on pane thickness, asymmetry between panes, and any laminated layer.

These properties trade against each other. Coatings that cut solar gain also cut visible transmittance, though not proportionally. Triple glazing lowers U-factor and adds weight and cost. Laminated glass improves low-frequency acoustics and alters solar transmission. The right combination depends on orientation, climate, shading and what the room is for — which is why a single glazing specification for a whole house is usually a compromise.

Why it matters

Glazing is where the enclosure is thermally weakest, visually most important, and most consequential for comfort. A wall might reach U-0.04; a good window is around U-0.20. It governs daylight, glare, view, solar gain, cooling load, and how cold the surface beside a sofa feels in January. It also has the longest lead time and the least flexibility once ordered, so orientation-specific decisions get made early or not at all.

The common misunderstanding

That windows are rated as glass. NFRC ratings cover the whole assembly, including the frame and the edge-of-glass region, and the frame is usually the weakest part. Center-of-glass figures quoted from a glass datasheet are better than the installed window will perform, which is why comparisons should use whole-window numbers.
