Dehumidification
Removing moisture from indoor air, either by condensing it on a surface below the dew point or adsorbing it onto a desiccant. Air conditioning does this as a side effect — which means it stops when cooling stops.

Dehumidification removes water vapor from air by one of two mechanisms. Condensing equipment cools air below its dew point on a coil, drains the water, and returns drier air — air conditioners, portable dehumidifiers and whole-house units all work this way. Desiccant equipment adsorbs moisture onto a material and regenerates it with heat, which is less common residentially.
The important consequence is that an air conditioner dehumidifies only while it is cooling. On a mild humid day, or in a well-insulated house with a low cooling load, the sensible demand is met quickly, the compressor stops, and moisture removal stops with it. Oversizing makes this worse: short cycles cool effectively and dehumidify poorly, and moisture left on the coil re-evaporates into the airstream when the fan runs on afterward.
That is why standalone or ducted dehumidification is a separate line item in humid climates rather than a redundancy. Capacity is stated in pints or litres per day at a specified test condition, and rated capacity falls at lower temperatures and humidities — which are exactly the conditions where the equipment is being asked to work.
Why it matters
Indoor humidity control determines whether a tight, well-insulated house in a humid climate is comfortable or clammy, and whether its assemblies stay dry. The house that most needs dedicated dehumidification is often the one whose cooling load is lowest, which is counterintuitive enough that it gets omitted from mechanical design. Adding it later means finding a location, a drain and duct connections in a finished building.
The common misunderstanding
That air conditioning handles humidity. It removes moisture as a byproduct of cooling and stops when cooling stops. Turning the thermostat down to dry the house out is the common response and an inefficient one: it overcools while removing less moisture than dedicated equipment would, and in shoulder seasons the compressor may barely run at all.
