A gas exhaled by everyone in the room. Indoors, its concentration above the outdoor background is largely a function of how many people are present and how much outdoor air the space is getting, which makes it a usable proxy for ventilation.

Outdoor carbon dioxide sits at roughly 420 ppm and rises slowly year over year, which sets the floor for any indoor reading. In a normally occupied bedroom without combustion sources, most of the rise above that floor comes from the people in the room, and outdoor air is what removes it. A closed bedroom with two people will typically climb through the night and level off wherever the room's leakage and the occupants' output balance.
That relationship is what makes the measurement useful. At the concentrations found in homes this is not primarily a toxicity question. It is the cheapest available indicator that a room is not getting enough outdoor air. Elevated occupant-generated carbon dioxide often indicates that other occupant-generated pollutants and moisture are also being removed slowly, since ventilation is what clears all of them — though each has its own sources, sinks and deposition behavior, so their concentrations do not track one another exactly.
The evidence on direct cognitive effects at moderate indoor concentrations is genuinely mixed. Some controlled studies have found decision-making decrements in the low thousands of ppm; others have failed to replicate them, and separating the effect of carbon dioxide itself from everything else that accumulates in underventilated air is methodologically hard. Treating the number as a ventilation signal is well supported. Treating it as a measured dose of a cognitive toxin is not.
Why it matters
A bedroom is where this is easiest to observe and most worth fixing, because it holds one or two people breathing in a closed space for eight hours. It is also the cheapest thing in a house to diagnose: a sensor on the nightstand answers in one night whether the room is ventilated. The available fixes differ in kind, though. Opening the bedroom door dilutes the room into the rest of the house rather than adding outdoor air; a cracked window or a ducted supply actually brings outdoor air in. The trend and the plateau matter more than any single reading.
The common misunderstanding
That an air purifier will bring it down. Nothing in a consumer filter removes carbon dioxide, and the machine can run all night in a closed bedroom while the number climbs. This is a ventilation problem by definition, and the practical residential solution is increased outdoor-air ventilation. If the reading falls while a purifier is running, the cause is usually a door that got opened — and even that mostly redistributes the room's air into the rest of the house rather than replacing it with outdoor air.
