Biophilic Design
A design approach connecting occupants to natural systems through daylight, views, materials, water and spatial variation. Useful when tied to specific decisions, and empty when used as a synonym for adding plants.

Biophilic design is an approach to connecting building occupants with natural systems — through daylight and its variation, views to the outdoors, natural materials and textures, water, planting, and spatial qualities such as prospect and refuge. The best-known articulation, Terrapin Bright Green's fourteen patterns, organizes it into named strategies rather than a list of features.
Its usefulness depends entirely on specificity. As a design brief it drives real decisions: orient primary rooms to the best light and view, admit daylight from more than one direction, vary ceiling height and enclosure so a plan offers both open and sheltered places, use materials whose grain and wear are visible. As a label it means very little, because it gets applied to any project with plants in it.
It is also not a measured discipline. There is no standardized biophilic metric, and the research base is uneven across the strategies grouped under the name — some, such as daylight and view, have substantial supporting literature and established metrics of their own; others are design principles with less behind them. Assessing a biophilic claim usually means assessing the underlying daylight, view and material decisions individually.
Why it matters
Biophilic design matters because it names the decisions made once, at plan stage, that cannot be recovered later — where the living space sits relative to the light and the view, how many directions daylight arrives from, whether the plan has variety. Those choices do more for how a house feels to be in than anything specified afterward, and they are the ones most often traded away for square footage.
The common misunderstanding
That it means adding plants and wood-look finishes. Planting is one pattern among many, and among the easiest both to add and to lose. The strategies with the strongest support — daylight, view, spatial variation — are structural, which means a house that got those right is more biophilic than one with a green wall in the entry.
