WaterRower has built water-resistance rowing machines in New England since the late 1980s. The Original Series uses hardwood rails, a rolling seat, a water tank and flywheel, and the S4 performance monitor; current versions add Bluetooth connectivity while retaining the same basic mechanical architecture. Resistance rises naturally with pull intensity as the paddle accelerates water in the tank, and the machine stores upright with the water still inside, making it unusually compatible with living spaces where cardio equipment cannot remain permanently horizontal.
