Best Approach

Municipal water is treated for safety, not quality. A high-performance home needs at minimum a whole-house sediment + carbon filter, and ideally a point-of-use reverse osmosis system for drinking water. The best setups layer filtration: whole-house pre-filter, water softener if needed, then under-sink RO for drinking and cooking. Skip the pitcher filters — they're a band-aid.

What to Know

Stage 1Whole-house sediment filter (5 micron) — removes particulates, rust, sand
Stage 2Whole-house carbon block — removes chlorine, VOCs, improves taste
Stage 3Water softener (if hard water) — prevents scale in pipes and appliances
Stage 4Under-sink RO (drinking water) — removes 95%+ of dissolved solids, lead, fluoride
RemineralizationPost-RO mineral cartridge recommended — adds back calcium and magnesium
Flow RateWhole-house systems should support 10–15 GPM for a typical home
MaintenanceSediment filter: 3–6 months. Carbon: 6–12 months. RO membrane: 2–3 years.
TestingStart with a water test — city or well. Know your TDS, hardness, chlorine, and lead levels.
