Best Approach
Bedding is the interface between your body and the mattress — and the difference between forgettable sleep and the kind you'd pay a hotel for. Focus on natural fibers (long-staple cotton, linen, eucalyptus), honest construction, and the hand-feel of the fabric. Skip anything marketed by thread count alone — above 400 is mostly marketing. Your sheets touch your skin for 2,500+ hours a year. Buy them well, and launder them simply.
What to Know
Primary FiberLong-staple cotton (percale or sateen), European linen, or TENCEL/eucalyptus. Avoid microfiber.
Percale vs SateenPercale = crisp, matte, breathable (hot sleepers). Sateen = silky, lustrous, warmer (cooler rooms).
LinenWrinkly, textured, gets softer with every wash. Best for warm climates. European flax is the gold standard.
Thread Count300–500 for percale. 400–600 for sateen. Higher numbers above this are usually multi-ply gimmicks.
CertificationsOEKO-TEX (no harmful chemicals), GOTS (organic cotton), MASTERS OF LINEN (European flax traceability).
Comforter FillWhite goose down (warmth, loft) or down alternative (hypoallergenic). Fill power 600+ for premium.
PillowDown for stomach sleepers, latex or memory foam for back/side. Replace every 2 years.
LaundryWash in cold/warm water. Air dry or tumble low. Line-dried sheets from sunshine have no substitute.
