Ion Exchange
A treatment process that swaps unwanted ions in water for others held on a resin. Conventional softening exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium; other resins target different ions entirely.

Ion exchange runs water through a bed of resin beads carrying loosely held ions. As water passes, ions in solution trade places with ions on the resin. Which ions are removed depends entirely on the resin chosen, not on the process.
Conventional softening is the familiar case: a cation resin loaded with sodium takes up calcium and magnesium and releases sodium in their place. The resin eventually fills, and the system regenerates by flushing it with concentrated brine, which strips the hardness ions off and sends them to drain. That is why softeners consume salt, discharge a brine stream, and are sized by hardness load rather than by house size.
Other resins do other jobs — anion resins for nitrate, sulfate and some PFAS applications, specialty resins for individual contaminants, potassium chloride in place of sodium chloride as the regenerant. The common thread is that something is always exchanged. Ion exchange does not remove ions from water so much as substitute one for another, and the substitute is a design decision.
Why it matters
Softening is one of the few whole-house water decisions with visible consequences either way: scale on fixtures and inside water heaters if hardness is left alone, and a change in taste, sodium content and plumbing chemistry if it is not. Because regeneration needs a drain and a salt supply, it is far easier to accommodate during construction than after. Sizing depends on the actual hardness of the supply, which is a test rather than an assumption.
The common misunderstanding
That a water softener purifies water. Softening addresses hardness minerals, which are a scaling and soap-performance problem rather than a health one. A softener typically does nothing about lead, PFAS, nitrate, chlorine taste or bacteria, and a house with one still needs its water tested for the things that bear on health.
