Flanking Path
Any route by which sound bypasses the assembly meant to block it — through shared framing, ductwork, outlets, or a floor that runs continuously beneath a wall. It sets the ceiling on real-world performance.

A flanking path is any route sound takes around the assembly meant to stop it. The common ones in houses: shared studs or joists carrying vibration between rooms, floor sheathing running continuously beneath a partition, back-to-back electrical boxes, a duct connecting two rooms, a continuous plenum above a dropped ceiling, or a gap where a wall meets an uneven surface.
Flanking is why laboratory ratings and field measurements diverge. A lab test presents one assembly in isolation; a building presents that assembly plus every structural and mechanical connection around it. The field-measured rating — ASTC, under ASTM E336 — reflects the whole set of paths, and flanking usually explains the gap.
The consequence is arithmetic rather than judgment. Isolation is limited by the weakest path, so upgrading a wall next to an unaddressed flanking route yields very little. Detailing at joints, transitions and penetrations does more for measured performance than moving up an assembly grade.
Why it matters
Flanking is the reason acoustic upgrades disappoint. A homeowner pays for a double-stud wall between a media room and a bedroom, hears almost no difference, and concludes acoustics are unfixable — when the slab continuity or the shared duct run was never addressed. Identifying paths is cheap while framing is open and expensive once it is closed, which makes flanking a rough-in conversation rather than a finish one.
The common misunderstanding
That sound isolation is a property of the wall. It is a property of every path between two rooms, and the assembly is only one of them. A specification naming an STC target without addressing framing continuity, penetrations and mechanical connections has specified the least important part of the outcome.
