An environmental product declaration is a standardized, third-party-verified report of a product's life-cycle environmental impacts. It is a Type III declaration under ISO 14025, based on an underlying life-cycle assessment and, for construction products, structured by EN 15804.

Comparability is both the point and the main pitfall. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same product category rules — the document that fixes the functional unit, system boundary, service life assumptions and reporting requirements for a product type. Two flooring EPDs written under different rules, or one cradle-to-gate and one cradle-to-grave, produce numbers that look subtractable and are not.

An EPD is also a disclosure rather than a benchmark. It reports impacts; it does not certify that they are low, and a product with an EPD is not thereby better than one without. Reading one means checking the category rules, the declared unit, which life-cycle stages are included, and the verification and expiry dates.

Why it matters

EPDs are how embodied carbon becomes specifiable rather than rhetorical, and they are increasingly requested for concrete, steel, insulation, glazing and finishes on high-end projects. For a homeowner they are the document that makes a supplier's environmental claim checkable — and the one that reveals when two suppliers are answering different questions. Asking for the EPD, rather than for a sustainability statement, is what moves the conversation from marketing to numbers, and a supplier who cannot produce one for a major structural material is telling you something.

The common misunderstanding

That having an EPD makes a product green. An EPD is a disclosure of impacts, verified for accuracy rather than for merit, and a high-impact product can publish an entirely valid one. Its presence says the manufacturer measured and reported. The numbers inside it, read against the same category rules, say whether the impacts are low.
